Nineworlds.
This Labor Day I am working on a labor of love: my ongoing illustrated adaptation of Norse mythology, which will be collected in the upcoming works @odinnsaga and @vikingsvalkyries . This is a diagram of Nineworlds.
🌳
According to Norse mythology, Yggdrasil, the Worldtree, connected the realms of existence together.
Nineworlds consisted of Asgard, land of the gods, Vanaheim, home of the vanir, Elfheim, home of the elves, Jotunheim, home of the giants, Mydgard, land of humans, Myrkheim, home of the dwarves, Muspelheim, the fire world, Nifelheim, the ice world, and Hel, realm of the cowardly dead.

Free weed prisoners.
FREE WEED PRISONERS. The criminalization of marijuana is a century of violence against Black, Latino, Native, and Asian communities, in addition to abuse of artists, dissidents, intellectuals, and students. Defund the police. Abolish private prisons. End mass incarceration. End prohibition. Legalize marijuana. And free weed prisoners.

🗽Black Lives Matter.
🗽Black Lives Matter. Black Americans are 13% of the US population, 24% of COVID deaths, 28% of those killed by police, 38% of inmates in state prisons, 38% of disenfranchised voters, and 3% of US Senators.

🦅 Arrest trump.
Arrest Trump for treason, aiding and abetting a hostile foreign power, obstruction of justice, intimidating a witness, perjury, fraud, corruption, illegal conflict of interest, nepotism, embezzlement, human trafficking, child trafficking, child abuse, sexual assault, rape, inciteful language, inciting violence, hate speech, discrimination, public endangerment, voter suppression, and a lot more that we haven’t even heard about yet.
BREAK ICE. The federal government has stolen children from their parents and kept them in unsanitary and inhumane camps with potentially fatal consequences. ICE ignores COVID regulations and endangers the lives of innocents. They have put children in crowded cages, sleeping on concrete floors, and have put babies on trial in a mockery of justice. Many of these children have been abused by ICE agents. This is what the Nazis did. It was unacceptable then and it is unacceptable now. Over 70,000 people were in ICE and CBP custody as of a year ago. The current number of people in custody is unknown to the public. ICE is not a public good. ICE is a public evil, and a violation of international law, universal human rights, and common fucking decency. Abolish ICE.

Black Lives Matter.
⭐️ Black Lives Matter.
Captain America debuted in his own comic on December 20, 1940. The cover depicted Captain America punching Hitler in the face. Conservative Americans were outraged, and sent hate mail to creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. At the time, the US hadn’t yet entered into World War II, and many Americans didn’t believe the rumors from Germany, or didn’t believe the US should get involved. Liberal interventionists believed it was the US’ duty to defend our Europen allies and stop the spread of fascism. But conservative isolationists didn’t think it was our business, and many conservative Americans approved of Hitler’s government and saw no reason to oppose him. Corporate media and cowardly politicians didn’t help, and Simon and Kirby, perturbed by the apathy, bigotry, and ignorance of many Americans, decided to create a super-hero to inspire action against tyranny and injustice. And thus Captain America was born.
Simon and Kirby received threats in the mail, and crowds of hostile conservatives lurked outside their offices. The mayor of New York City, Fiorello La Guardia, had to provide a police detail to keep Simon and Kirby safe. As the year passed, more and more Americans grew disturbed by the abuses of Nazi Germany, and the United States finally joined the Allies to fight against Hitler nearly a year after Captain America punched him in the face in a comic.
In 2020, the federal government of the United States has been compromised by the right-wing authoritarian government of Russia under Vladmir Putin, who funnelled money through the NRA to finance Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. A disgusting assortment of our country’s worst thieves, parasites, and bigots have been appointed to the highest offices in the land, and the incompetence, corruption, and blatant racism of the Trump administration knows no bounds. American police forces continue a long-standing tradition of the murder and abuse of Black Americans, largely without any consequences. These abuses are supported by Trump, who has deployed the National Guard against American citizens. Protestors are beaten, detained, and hit with tear gas, which is a violation of international law according to the Geneva Conventions. Trump’s racism veers from obvious to subtle, and has been a constant trait of his campaign since he had Black men publicly and forcibly removed from his rallies in 2016. Trump has done nothing to inhibit the spread of the COVID-19 virus, which disproportionally kills Black, Latino, and Native American communities due to systemic racism and inequality, and initially went so far as to pretend COVID-19 was a liberal hoax, as his wealthy Republican friends sold off stocks before they dipped. Additionally, under the zero-tolerance policies that started under the Trump administration, ICE and Border Patrol have instituted a family separation policy, resulting in thousands of immigrants, including children, held in cages and separated from their families. Thousands of these childen have been “lost” or are unaccounted for. The United States government is in the business of human trafficking, and private prisons make money capturing Latino immigrants and Black youth.
Enough is enough. Fight the power. Fight fascism. End white supremacy. And punch tyrants and bigots in the face. Black Lives Matter.

🕸 Spider-Man: Far From Home
🕷 Hanging in Venice
I had a lot of fun working on this poster for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Spider-Man: Homecoming was brilliant, and I can’t wait for the sequel.
I am even more excited that it is set in Venice, Italy, one of my favorite cities in the world and a place of otherworldly beauty. I had the good fortune of visiting Venice when I studied abroad in Italy in college, and it is a wonderful city for wandering, sightseeing, and falling in love. I wanted this poster to capture the unbridled romance of Venice, along with the fun and whimsy of Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man. Hope you enjoy it.
Nancy
NANCY OFFER died last Christmas Eve. It was fitting that she died on a holiday, considering the joy and comfort she brought to so many lives. It took me a while to finish this painting. A part of it was that I kept putting it off. I didn’t want to confront my own sadness. I still don’t. Another part of it was that I couldn’t get her nose right. She had a great nose. But hopefully this likeness does her justice... even though the nose isn’t quite right.
I didn’t have this painting ready in time for her funeral. I didn’t even make it to her funeral in February. I had work that weekend. I regret it. Maybe I wasn’t ready to say goodbye, either.
Nancy was a kind mentor in my life at a time when I needed one. She was a patient parent at a time when my parents and I didn’t get along. We usually didn’t get along. When I was grounded for the final semester of my senior year at LGHS, because I got into a car accident, and forbidden by my parents from attending senior prom, Nancy slipped me some money so I could sneak away and rent a limo. I promised I’d pay her back. “Don’t pay me back,” she told me. “Just pay it forward some day.” I haven’t yet. But I will.
Nancy co-founded a publication called REALITY CHECK. Reality Check gave students at my high school, including myself, a space to write about our experiences, a space to write about things that were too real for the school paper. We released a new issue each month. We had issues about dysfunctional families. Issues about bullying. Issues about eating disorders. Issues about violence. Issues about sex. Issues about pregnancy. Issues about issues. We wrote about the realities of our high school lives in a community that wasn’t as perfect as it seemed. Our stories were anonymous, and submitted by all kinds of students: jocks, preps, stoners, punks, metalheads, drop-outs, underachievers, overachievers, rich kids, poor kids, homeless kids. Many people had stories to tell. In doing so, we realized that we weren’t alone.
I joined Reality Check and helped with graphic design, printing, and collecting and soliciting anonymous stories from my peers. I wrote a few myself, too. It helped. The Reality Check team was mostly combined of college-bound kids with many extracurriculars. I didn’t really fit in. But ultimately I, too, became a college-bound kid with many extracurriculars. I pitched Reality Check to the Rotary Club, thanks to the help of my boss at the time, Dr. Coughlin. The Rotary, among others, provided the funding that kept our monthly newsletter in print.
Word got out about Reality Check. We were nominated for, and won, the Golden Bell award. This was a big deal. They hosted us at a fancy banquet dinner in San Francisco. We were celebrated. It was wonderful. And my involvement with Reality Check helped me get accepted to Pitzer College.
Nancy helped change the course of my life, and, more importantly, she helped many of us find a voice, find solidarity and commonality with our peers, and realize that we are not alone in the world.
Nancy was a source of honesty and kindness, both qualities that seem sometimes rare, and she encouraged honesty and kindness in others. She is proof that an individual can make an impact on their communities in a significant way. I regret not keeping in touch with her better, and I am comforted only by the fact that I know that she would, as usual, understand.
I never talked with Nancy much about religion. I’ve never been very religious. I think she was, a bit. At least she believed in kindness, and generosity, and inclusion, and truth. Nancy’s spirit has moved on. But Nancy’s spirit also lives on in all of us who were blessed enough to know her.
Thank you, Nancy.

Head Lopper
Andrew MacLean writes and illustrates a wonderful comic called HEAD LOPPER that he publishes through Image Comics.
I had the pleasure of illustrating a few of his characters, Norgal, Zhaania, and Xho, on my iPad Pro, and with any luck they may be published in an upcoming issue.
Baldy
Though I attended Pitzer College, one of the Claremont Colleges, nestled beneath the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, I had never hiked to the summit of nearby Mount Baldy... until today.
We started the hike early in the morning, waking at 4 am and driving to the San Gabriel Mountains from Los Angeles. As I am a bit of a night owl, it is always a struggle for me to rise and shine before the sun does, especially considering that despite my best efforts I had only managed four hours of sleep the night before. It was a grueling hike, and at times my body felt like it was shutting down. I realized that I was experiencing dehydration, which I remedied with water and rest.
Thankfully, with the support, patience, and encouragement of my friends, I was able to hike to the summit of Mount Baldy and back down again, and experience many stunning views on the way. At the end of our trek, my Apple Watch revealed that I had hiked 13 miles that day. It was a good adventure.
Black Butte and Mount Shasta
I am at the top of the state of California, the crown of the Golden State, and I am surrounded by beauty. Black Butte looms next to the highway, and in the distance the snowy peak of Mount Shasta glistens in the heat of a summer day.
Mossbrae Falls
I was at the top of the state of California, about 10 miles southwest of Mount Shasta. The day was hot and sweltering. I was hiking along rocks next to dusty train tracks, the summer sun beating down on me from above. However, my hike was rewarded as I clambered down the hillside to the creek and beheld the green, glistening beauty of Mossbrae Falls. I quickly stripped down to my trunks and waded in to the icy cold pool at the foot of the falls, washing myself clean of the dust and sweat of my journey.
Rock On.
I had a nice adventure in Vasquez Rocks today, and I had a lot of fun exploring before narrowly escaping an unexpected thunderstorm. Vasquez Rocks is home to iconic rock formations that have been featured in productions ranging from Star Trek in the 1960s to Westworld in 2016.
It was a pleasure roaming this magical place.
Montaña de Oro
I stopped by one of my favorite spots on the California coast today, and enjoyed a nice hike in the rain. The sun broke through the clouds as I walked along the beach, and I caught a lovely rainbow as I looked up the coast towards Morro Bay.
